Or print a blank template and write it by hand. ## How to make a rent receipt Three steps, about a minute. ### 1. Enter the payment Type the tenant's name, the rental address, the amount, the date you received it, and the rent period it covers. ### 2. Check the preview The receipt fills in as you type, with the amount written out in words the way a check is, so it is hard to alter later. ### 3. Download and sign Download the PDF, print two copies, sign both, give one to the tenant and keep one for your records. ## What a rent receipt should include A rent receipt is proof that a tenant paid and that you received it. These are the details that make it useful if anyone ever has to look back at it. ### Date the rent was received The day the money changed hands, not the day rent was due. It matters when a payment is late or disputed. ### Tenant name and rental address The full name of the person who paid and the address of the unit, including the apartment number. ### Amount, in numbers and words Writing the amount both ways, as on a check, makes the receipt harder to change after the fact. ### The period the rent covers For example 10/01/2026 to 10/31/2026. This is what ties a payment to a specific month. ### How it was paid Cash, check (with the check number), money order, or an electronic transfer. Cash payments are the ones that most need a receipt. ### Who received it, with a signature The landlord's or agent's name and signature. Note any balance still owed so both sides see the same number. ## Rent receipt questions Short answers for landlords and tenants. ### What is a rent receipt? A rent receipt is a written record that a tenant paid rent and the landlord received it. It shows who paid, how much, for which rental and period, on what date, and how the payment was made. ### Is this rent receipt generator really free? Yes. You can fill in and download as many rent receipts as you need without paying or creating an account. The blank PDF and Word templates are free too. ### Do landlords have to give a rent receipt? It depends on where the rental is. Some states and cities require a receipt, most often when rent is paid in cash or when the tenant asks for one. Check your state's landlord-tenant law or ask your local housing agency. Giving a receipt every time is a good habit either way. ### Is the information I type saved or uploaded? It is not uploaded. The receipt is created in your browser, and the tenant's details are never sent to a server or saved. Your own name, your contact line and the next receipt number are kept in this browser so you do not have to retype them next month. ### Can I use this as a rent receipt template in Word? Yes. Use the Blank template (Word) button under the preview to download a .docx file you can edit in Word or Google Docs. There is also a blank PDF with three receipts per page for printing. ### Should I keep a copy of each receipt? Yes. Keep a copy of every receipt you give. Landlords use them for bookkeeping and taxes, and tenants use them as proof of payment when they apply for a new rental, a loan, or assistance. ### Can a tenant write their own rent receipt? A tenant can fill one in, but lenders, landlords and agencies will generally only accept it once the landlord or their agent has signed it. The tenant must not sign it on the landlord's behalf. If your landlord will not give a receipt, pay in a way that leaves a record, such as a check or bank transfer. ## Related guides [AI guide index](https://rentpaperwork.com/llms.txt) · [All guides in one file](https://rentpaperwork.com/llms-full.txt) - [Rent Ledger Template: Free Online, PDF & Spreadsheet](https://rentpaperwork.com/rent-ledger.md): Track rent charges and payments with a running balance. The balance updates as you go, and you can download the ledger as a PDF or as a spreadsheet for Excel. ## How to keep a rent ledger One ledger per tenant, one line per event. ### 1. Add what was owed Add a rent charge on the day rent is due each month. Late fees and other charges get their own line. ### 2. Add what was paid Add a payment on the day you actually received it, for the amount you actually received, even if it was only part of the rent. ### 3. Read the balance The last balance is what your records show the tenant owes. Download the PDF whenever you or the tenant need a copy. ## What a rent ledger should show A rent ledger is the full payment history for one tenant in one place. A receipt proves a single payment; the ledger shows how every charge and payment adds up. ### Tenant, landlord and address Who the ledger is for and which unit it covers. Keep a separate ledger for each tenancy. ### The date of every entry For charges, the day the money became due. For payments, the day you received it. ### A plain description "Rent for October 2026", "Payment received", "Late fee". Anyone reading it later should understand each line without asking. ### Charges and payments in separate columns Keeping money owed and money paid apart makes it easy to total each one and to spot a missed month. ### A running balance The amount owed after each line. A balance of zero means the tenant is paid up; a negative balance means they have a credit. ### An opening balance If you start the ledger partway through a tenancy, enter what was already owed so the totals are right from the first line. ## Rent ledger questions Short answers for landlords and tenants. ### What is a rent ledger? A rent ledger is a running record of everything a tenant has been charged and everything they have paid, in date order, with the balance after each entry. Landlords use it for bookkeeping; tenants ask for it as proof of their payment history. ### Is this rent ledger really free? Yes. You can fill it in, download the PDF and the spreadsheet file, and print the blank template without paying or creating an account. ### Where is my ledger saved? In your own browser, on the device you are using. Nothing is sent to a server. It does not appear on your other devices, and it can disappear: clearing your browser data erases it, and some browsers remove saved data on their own (Safari does after about a week without a visit). Download the Excel (.csv) file each time you update the ledger. You can load that file back into this page with Restore from a saved file. ### Can I open the ledger in Excel or Google Sheets? Yes. The Excel (.csv) button downloads a spreadsheet file (.csv) with the same columns and the running balance. It opens in Excel and Numbers, and you can import it into Google Sheets. ### What is the difference between a rent ledger and a rent receipt? A rent receipt records one payment and is handed to the tenant. A rent ledger lists every charge and payment over the whole tenancy. Most landlords give a receipt for each payment and keep the ledger for themselves. ### How do I record a partial payment? Add a payment line for the amount you received on the day you received it. The balance will show what is still owed. When the rest arrives, add another payment line. ### Can a tenant ask for a copy of the rent ledger? Tenants often need one when they apply for a new rental, a loan or rental assistance. Whether a landlord must provide it depends on state and local law, but sharing it is usually the fastest way to settle a question about what was paid. ## Related guides [AI guide index](https://rentpaperwork.com/llms.txt) · [All guides in one file](https://rentpaperwork.com/llms-full.txt) - [Rent Receipt Template & Free Generator (PDF, Word)](https://rentpaperwork.com/index.md): Fill in a rent receipt online and download it as a PDF in under a minute, or print a blank rent receipt template. Download the notice as a PDF or Word file to print, sign and deliver. ## How to write a rent increase letter Keep it short, specific and polite. ### 1. Check the notice you owe Look up how many days of written notice your state and city require, how the notice has to be delivered, and whether there is a limit on the amount, before you pick a start date. ### 2. Fill in the numbers Enter the current rent, the new rent and the date the new rent starts. The letter states all three so nothing is left to interpretation. ### 3. Sign and deliver it Print and sign the letter, deliver it the way your lease and local law call for, and keep a copy with the date and how you delivered it. ## What a rent increase letter should include A rent increase notice only needs a few facts. Leaving one out is what causes disputes later. ### The date of the letter Notice periods are counted in days, so the date you wrote and delivered the letter matters. ### Tenant name and rental address The names on the lease and the full address of the unit, including the apartment number. ### The current rent and the new rent State both amounts, not just the difference, so the tenant can see exactly what changes. ### The date the new rent starts A specific calendar date. For a fixed-term lease this is normally the day the current term ends. ### What stays the same One sentence confirming the other terms of the rental agreement are unchanged avoids confusion. ### Your name, signature and contact So the tenant knows who the notice is from and how to reach you with questions. ## How much notice a rent increase needs, by state It depends on where the rental is. Some states have a law written for rent increases; many do not. This is general information, not legal advice. It covers residential month-to-month rentals in the states listed and is not a complete statement of any law. Cities and counties often add their own rules, subsidized and rent-regulated housing is treated differently, and a written lease can change some of these periods. Laws change: we read each statute cited here on October 7, 2026. Read the current statute or ask your local housing agency before you send a notice. ### States with a notice period written for rent increases - **California**: For month-to-month and shorter periodic tenancies: at least 30 days' notice if the increase, together with any other increases in the previous 12 months, is 10% or less; at least 90 days if it is more than 10%. Serving the notice by mail adds time. Source: Cal. Civ. Code § 827 - **Colorado**: Where there is no written rental agreement: at least 60 days' written notice. Rent may not be increased more than once in any 12-month period. Source: C.R.S. §§ 38-12-701, 38-12-702 - **Maryland**: At least 60 days' notice for a tenancy of more than one week and up to one month, which includes month-to-month; at least 90 days for a term longer than one month. The statute also sets how the notice must be delivered, and local laws can be stricter. Source: Md. Code, Real Property § 8-209 - **Nevada**: At least 60 days' written notice, or 30 days for a periodic tenancy of less than one month. Source: NRS 118A.300 - **New York**: When the rent will go up by 5% or more: at least 30 days' notice if the tenant has lived there less than one year and the lease term is less than one year; 60 days if either the time lived there or the lease term is at least one year but less than two; 90 days if either is two years or more. Source: N.Y. Real Property Law § 226-c - **Oregon**: No increase during the first year of a tenancy, and no more than one increase in 12 months. For any tenancy other than week-to-week: at least 90 days' written notice stating the amount of the increase, the new rent and the date it takes effect. A landlord who relies on an exemption from the state cap must state the facts supporting it in the notice. Source: ORS 90.323 - **Washington**: At least 90 days' written notice, or 30 days for subsidized tenancies where rent is based on income. An increase cannot take effect before the end of the lease term, and rent cannot be raised in the first 12 months of a tenancy. The notice must be substantially in the form set out in RCW 59.18.720 and served the way RCW 59.12.040 requires. The letter made on this page does not follow that form, so do not use it as a Washington rent increase notice. Source: RCW 59.18.140, RCW 59.18.700, RCW 59.18.720 ### States with no separate notice period for rent increases In these states we did not find a statute that sets a notice period specifically for raising the rent. The period shown is the notice the statute requires to end a month-to-month tenancy, which is the usual reference point for changing its terms. It is not a rule written for rent increases, and a written lease may set a different period. - **Arizona**: 30 days before the periodic rental date. Source: A.R.S. § 33-1375 - **Florida**: 30 days before the end of a monthly period. Source: Fla. Stat. § 83.57 - **Illinois**: 30 days' written notice. Chicago and some other cities have their own ordinances. Source: 735 ILCS 5/9-207 - **Massachusetts**: The interval between rent payments or 30 days, whichever is longer. Source: M.G.L. c. 186, § 12 - **Michigan**: One month. Source: MCL 554.134 - **Minnesota**: At least one full rental period, which is one month when rent is paid monthly. Source: Minn. Stat. § 504B.135 - **Missouri**: One month's written notice. Source: RSMo § 441.060 - **North Carolina**: 7 days. Source: N.C.G.S. § 42-14 - **Ohio**: 30 days before the periodic rental date. Source: Ohio Rev. Code § 5321.17 - **Texas**: One month. A signed written agreement can set a different period. Source: Tex. Prop. Code § 91.001 - **Virginia**: 30 days before the next rent due date. Source: Va. Code § 55.1-1253 - **Wisconsin**: 28 days. Source: Wis. Stat. § 704.19 ### If your state is not listed We only list states where we have read the statute ourselves. For any other state, look up its landlord-tenant statute or ask your state or local housing agency. ### Fixed-term leases A lease normally fixes the rent until the term ends, so an increase usually starts with a renewal or a new lease, unless the lease itself allows a change during the term. ### Limits on the amount California (Civ. Code § 1947.12), Oregon (ORS 90.323) and Washington (RCW 59.18.700) cap yearly increases for many rentals, with exemptions. Many cities have their own rent control rules. ### Counting the days Notice periods usually run from the day the tenant receives the notice, not the date written on the letter, and mailing can add days. Give more notice than the minimum. ## Rent increase letter questions Short answers for landlords. ### What is a rent increase letter? A rent increase letter is a written notice from a landlord telling a tenant that the rent will go up. It states the current rent, the new rent and the date the new rent takes effect. ### How much notice do I have to give for a rent increase? It depends on the state and sometimes the city. Thirty days is common for month-to-month rentals, some states require 60 or 90 days, especially for larger increases or longer tenancies, and a few allow less. See the state list on this page, then check your own state's statute and your city's rules before you pick a start date. ### Can I raise the rent in the middle of a lease? Usually not. A fixed-term lease sets the rent for the whole term, so an increase normally starts when the lease ends or renews, unless the lease itself says the rent can change. ### Is there a limit on how much I can raise the rent? In many places there is no cap, but some states and many cities limit yearly increases, and rent-controlled or subsidized units have their own rules. Check your state law and your city's housing office before choosing the new amount. ### How should I deliver a rent increase letter? Follow your lease and your state's rules for serving notices. Handing it to the tenant and mailing it are the most common methods; email usually does not count unless your lease or state law says it does. Keep a signed copy and note the date and how you delivered it. In some states mailing adds days to the notice period. ### Does the tenant have to sign the letter? For a month-to-month tenancy, usually not: a notice that meets your state's requirements does not need the tenant's signature. A new rent after a fixed-term lease ends is normally agreed in a renewal or a new lease. Asking the tenant to acknowledge that they received the notice is still useful for your records. ### Is this rent increase letter template free? Yes. You can download the letter as a PDF or Word file or copy the text without paying or creating an account. What you type stays in your browser. Example only. The names and address are made up. - receiptNo: 1001 - date: 10/01/2026 - tenantName: Jordan Smith - amountWords: One thousand two hundred fifty and 00/100 dollars - amount: 1,250.00 - propertyAddress: 128 Maple St, Apt 2B, Columbus, OH 43215 - period: 10/01/2026 to 10/31/2026 - paidBy: Cash - balanceDue: 0.00 - receivedBy: Alex Rivera ### Receipt number Number your receipts in order: 1001, 1002, 1003. A missing number tells you a receipt was lost, and the number lets you and the tenant refer to the same piece of paper. ### Date Write the day you received the money, not the day the rent was due. If rent was due on the 1st and paid on the 5th, the receipt says the 5th. ### Received from The full name of the person who paid, as it appears on the lease. If someone else paid on the tenant's behalf, write their name and add "for" and the tenant's name. ### The sum of Write the amount in words and again in numbers in the box, the way you would on a check: "One thousand two hundred fifty and 00/100 dollars" and "1,250.00". Writing it both ways makes the amount harder to alter. ### For rent of The address of the rental, including the apartment or unit number. This matters if the tenant or the landlord has more than one property. ### For the period The dates the payment covers, such as 10/01/2026 to 10/31/2026. This is what ties the payment to a particular month. ### Paid by Mark cash, check, money order or electronic. For a check or money order, write its number. Cash is the method that most needs a receipt, because it leaves no other record. ### Balance due What the tenant still owes after this payment. Write 0.00 when the rent is paid in full, so nobody can add a figure later. ### Received by and signature Print the name of the landlord or agent who took the payment, then sign. Make two copies: one for the tenant and one for your records. [Fill out a rent receipt online](https://rentpaperwork.com/#generator) ## Less common situations The same receipt works for all of these. What changes is what you write on a line or two. ### A partial payment Write the amount actually received and put the unpaid remainder under balance due. Give another receipt when the rest is paid. ### Rent plus a late fee Write the total received and note the split, for example "includes $50 late fee", so the rent and the fee can be told apart later. ### Several months at once Make the period cover all the months paid, such as 10/01/2026 to 12/31/2026, or write one receipt per month. ### Roommates paying separately Give each person a receipt for the amount they paid, with the full unit address on each one. ### A security deposit Use a separate receipt and label it as a deposit. Deposits are not rent and are tracked and returned differently. ### A mistake on the receipt Do not write over it. Mark the receipt void, keep it, and write a new one with the next number. ## Questions about filling out a rent receipt Short answers for landlords and tenants. ### Who fills out a rent receipt? The landlord or the landlord's agent fills it out and signs it, because the receipt is their statement that they received the money. A tenant can prepare one in advance, but it will generally only be accepted as a receipt once the landlord has signed it. ### What date goes on a rent receipt? The date the payment was received. The month the rent is for goes on the separate "for the period" line. ### Do I have to write the amount in words? It is not required everywhere, but it is good practice. Writing the amount both in words and in numbers makes a handwritten receipt much harder to change afterwards. ### How do I fill out a rent receipt for cash? Mark cash as the payment method, write the exact amount received in words and in numbers, and sign it at the moment the cash changes hands. Both sides should keep a copy, since the receipt is the only record of a cash payment. ### How do I fill out a receipt book for rent? A receipt book has the same lines as the example above. Fill in the date, who paid, the amount in words and numbers, what it was for (rent for the address and month), how it was paid, and sign. Tear out the top copy for the tenant; the carbon copy stays in the book. ### How long should I keep rent receipts? Keep them for at least as long as you keep the tax records they support, and until any deposit or dispute for that tenancy is settled. Every statement starts as left out, and the letter only includes the ones you pick. ## How to write a landlord reference letter Stick to facts you can back up from your own records. ### 1. Confirm the tenancy Enter the tenant's name, the rental address and the dates they lived there. Leave the move-out date empty for a current tenant. ### 2. Choose what you can vouch for Payment history, the condition of the unit, following the lease. Every statement is left out until you choose it, so the letter only says what you decided to say. ### 3. Sign and send Download the PDF or Word file, sign it, and give it to the tenant or send it to whoever asked. Include a phone number or email so they can verify it. ## What a landlord reference letter should include A new landlord reading the letter wants to know three things: did this person really rent from you, did they pay, and did they look after the place. ### Your name and contact details The reader may call to check the letter is real. A letter with no way to reach the writer carries little weight. ### The address and the dates Which unit the tenant rented and when they moved in and out. These are the facts most often verified. ### Rent amount and payment history What the rent was and whether it was paid on time. This is usually the part the new landlord cares about most. ### How the unit was kept A sentence on the condition of the property during and at the end of the tenancy. ### Whether they followed the lease Only say this if it is true for the whole tenancy. Leaving it out is better than overstating it. ### Whether you would rent to them again The clearest signal you can give. If the honest answer is no, leave the line out rather than write something negative. ## Landlord reference letter questions Short answers for landlords and tenants. ### What is a landlord reference letter? A landlord reference letter is a short letter from a current or former landlord confirming that a person rented from them, for how long, and how they behaved as a tenant. Tenants give it to a new landlord or property manager when they apply for a rental. ### Does a landlord have to write a reference letter? Generally no. Writing a reference is a courtesy, not an obligation. Many landlords are glad to write one for a tenant who paid on time and looked after the unit. ### What if the tenant was not a good tenant? Keep to facts you can document, such as the dates of the tenancy and the rent amount, and leave out the statements you cannot honestly make. You can also decline to write a letter. Do not include opinions or anything you could not prove from your records. ### Can a tenant write the letter for the landlord to sign? Yes, and it often speeds things up. A tenant can fill in this template and send it to the landlord, who should read it, correct anything that is not accurate, and sign it. It is only a landlord reference once the landlord has signed it, and the tenant must not sign or send it on the landlord's behalf. ### How long should a landlord reference letter be? Half a page is enough. Four or five short paragraphs covering the tenancy dates, the rent and payment history, the condition of the unit, and your contact details. ### Is this landlord reference letter template free? Yes. You can download the letter as a PDF or Word file or copy the text without paying or creating an account. What you type stays in your browser. Enter the rent and the period, then download it as a PDF or Word file. ## How to write a proof of rent payment letter Take the numbers from your records, not from memory. ### 1. Pick the period Ask the tenant what the requester needs. Lenders and housing programs often ask for the last 12 months. ### 2. Enter what was paid Add the monthly rent, the total received in the period and any balance still owed. A rent ledger makes these numbers easy to find. ### 3. Sign and send Download the letter, sign it, and include a phone number or email so whoever receives it can confirm it with you. ## What a proof of rent payment letter should include Whoever asked for the letter wants to verify a payment history. These are the facts they look for. ### Landlord name and contact details The letter is only useful if the reader can reach the person who wrote it. ### Tenant name and rental address Exactly as they appear on the lease, including the unit number. ### The monthly rent The amount due each month during the period the letter covers. ### The period covered A start date and an end date, so there is no doubt which months the letter speaks for. ### What was paid, and whether on time The total received in the period. Say payments were on time only if every one of them was. ### Any balance still owed State the balance as of the date of the letter, even if it is zero. ## Proof of rent payment questions Short answers for tenants and landlords. ### What is a proof of rent payment letter? It is a letter signed by a landlord confirming that a tenant rents a particular address, how much the rent is, and what the tenant has paid over a stated period. Lenders often call it a verification of rent. ### Who asks for proof of rent payment? Mortgage lenders, new landlords and property managers, rental assistance and benefit programs, and sometimes employers or agencies that need to confirm where someone lives and that their housing costs are paid. ### Can a tenant write their own proof of rent payment letter? A tenant can fill in the template to save the landlord time, but the letter has to be reviewed and signed by the landlord or their agent. Lenders, landlords and agencies will generally only accept it with the landlord's signature, and the tenant must not sign or send it on the landlord's behalf. ### What else counts as proof of rent payment? Signed rent receipts, a rent ledger from the landlord, cancelled checks, bank statements showing the transfers, and money order stubs. If your landlord will not write a letter, these records are the usual alternative. ### Does a proof of rent letter need to be notarized? Usually not, but some lenders and programs ask for it. Check with whoever requested the letter before you send it. ### Is this proof of rent payment letter free? Yes. You can download the letter as a PDF or Word file or copy the text without paying or creating an account. What you type stays in your browser. Come back at move-out, fill in the second column, and download one PDF that shows both. ## How to do a rental walkthrough Do it together with the tenant, with the lights on. ### 1. Walk through at move-in Before the tenant's belongings come in, go room by room. Mark each item good, fair or damaged and write down anything specific, such as a stain, a chip or a scratch. ### 2. Sign and keep a copy Download the PDF, have the landlord and the tenant both sign and date it, and give each side a copy. Photos taken the same day are worth attaching. ### 3. Repeat at move-out Load the same checklist, switch to move-out and record the condition again. The PDF puts the two columns side by side so changes are easy to see. ## What a rental inspection checklist should cover The point of the checklist is to have one record, agreed by both sides, of what the unit looked like at the start and at the end of the tenancy. ### Every room, item by item Walls, floors, windows, doors, lights and outlets in each room, plus the appliances and fixtures that come with the unit. ### Condition and specifics A rating alone is not much use later. Note exactly what you see and where: a burn on the counter left of the stove says more than "fair". ### Move-in and move-out side by side Recording both inspections on the same form is what makes it possible to tell new damage from what was already there. ### Dates of both inspections The day each walkthrough actually happened, not the lease start or end date. ### Signatures from both sides The landlord and the tenant sign at move-in and again at move-out. A checklist only one side has seen carries much less weight. ### Safety items and keys Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, heating and cooling, locks, and how many keys and remotes were handed over. ## Rental inspection checklist questions Short answers for landlords and tenants. ### What is a rental inspection checklist? It is a room-by-room record of the condition of a rental unit, usually filled in when the tenant moves in and again when they move out. It is also called a move-in move-out checklist, a rental walkthrough checklist or a condition report. ### Is a move-in inspection checklist required? It depends on where the rental is. Some states and cities require a written checklist or condition statement at move-in, and some tie it to how a security deposit can be handled. The rules differ, so check your state's landlord-tenant law or ask your local housing agency. Doing one is good practice everywhere. ### Who fills out the checklist, the landlord or the tenant? Ideally both, together, during a walkthrough. If you cannot meet, one side can fill it in and give it to the other to review, add to and sign. What matters is that both sides sign the same version. ### Should I take photos as well? Yes. Dated photos or a short video of each room back up what is written on the checklist. Keep them with your signed copy. ### Where is my checklist saved? In your own browser, on the device you are using. Nothing is sent to a server. Because browsers can erase saved data on their own, use Save to a file after the move-in inspection and load that file with Restore from a file when the tenant moves out. ### Can I add or remove rooms and items? Yes. Rename any room or item, remove what does not apply, and add bedrooms, bathrooms, a garage, laundry or your own items. There is also a blank PDF template if you prefer to write by hand. ### Is this rental inspection checklist free? Yes. You can fill it in, download the PDF and the blank template, and save your work to a file without paying or creating an account. Untick what does not apply and download it as a PDF or Word file. ## How to use a move-out checklist Send it early, so nothing is a surprise on the last day. ### 1. Tailor the list Enter the tenant, the address and the move-out date. Untick items that do not apply to this unit and add anything specific to it. ### 2. Give it to the tenant early Send the checklist when you receive notice that the tenant is leaving, not the week they move. It gives them time to do the work or ask questions. ### 3. Use it at the walkthrough Bring a copy to the move-out inspection and go through it together, alongside the condition checklist from move-in. ## What a tenant move-out checklist should include A good move-out checklist tells the tenant exactly what you expect, in plain words, before they hand back the keys. ### The move-out date and the address So there is no doubt which unit the list is for and when everything needs to be done. ### Keys, remotes and passes Every key, garage remote and parking pass that was handed over at move-in. ### A forwarding address Ask for it in writing. You will need somewhere to send mail and anything owed after the tenancy ends. ### A room-by-room cleaning list Kitchen appliances, bathrooms, floors and walls. Specific tasks are easier to follow than "leave it clean". ### Belongings, trash and utilities Everything removed, including from storage and outdoor areas, and utilities in the tenant's name stopped or transferred. ### How to reach you A phone number or email for questions, and how to arrange the move-out inspection. ## Tenant move-out checklist questions Short answers for landlords and tenants. ### What is a tenant move-out checklist? It is a list a landlord gives a tenant before they leave, setting out what needs to be done: returning keys, giving a forwarding address, removing belongings and cleaning the unit. ### When should I give the tenant the move-out checklist? As soon as you know they are leaving, ideally when you receive their notice. Some landlords also attach it to the lease at move-in so expectations are clear from the start. ### How clean does a rental have to be at move-out? That depends on your lease and on state and local law. A common standard is that the unit is returned as clean as it was at move-in, allowing for normal wear and tear, but the rules differ. Check your lease and your state's landlord-tenant law. ### Is this the same as a move-out inspection checklist? No. This checklist tells the tenant what to do before leaving. A move-out inspection checklist records the condition of the unit, room by room, when they leave. Many landlords use both. ### Can I use this as a move-out cleaning checklist? Yes. The cleaning sections cover all rooms, the kitchen, bathrooms and outside areas. Untick the Before you leave section if you only want the cleaning list. ### Is this move-out checklist free? Yes. You can download it as a PDF or Word file or copy the text without paying or creating an account. What you type stays in your browser. By using the Service you agree to these Terms. ## 1. What the Service is RentPaperwork provides free tools for creating rent paperwork: rent receipts, rent ledgers, and letters such as rent increase notices, proof of rent payment letters and landlord reference letters. You fill in the details and download the result. No account is required. ## 2. Not legal advice The templates, the wording they produce and the explanations on this site are general information. They are **not legal advice** and are not a substitute for a lawyer or your local housing agency. Landlord-tenant law differs between states and cities and changes over time. Rules about notice periods, limits on rent increases, required wording, delivery of notices and when a receipt must be given may apply to you. You are responsible for checking that any document you create meets the requirements where the rental is located before you rely on it or send it. ## 3. Your responsibility for what you create You decide what goes into each document, and you are responsible for making sure it is true and accurate. We do not review, verify or store the documents you create. ## 4. Acceptable use You agree to use the Service only to document real tenancies and real payments. You must not use it to: - create a receipt, ledger or letter for a payment or tenancy that did not happen, or with amounts or dates you know to be false; - create a document in someone else's name without their authority, or forge a signature; - mislead a landlord, tenant, lender, employer, court, government agency or anyone else; - break any law, or interfere with or overload the Service. Creating or using a false rent document can be a crime. We may cooperate with lawful requests from authorities. ## 5. Our content The site, its design and its template wording belong to us. You may use the documents you create for your own rentals, including printing, signing and sharing them. You may not copy the site or resell the templates as your own product. ## 6. Availability and changes The Service is provided free of charge and we may change, suspend or stop any part of it at any time. If paid features are added in the future, they will be clearly described and these Terms will be updated before they apply. ## 7. Disclaimer and limitation of liability The Service is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind. We do not warrant that the templates are suitable for your situation or meet the legal requirements where you are. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from a document you created with the Service, including a notice that turns out to be invalid or a dispute between a landlord and a tenant. You agree to indemnify us against claims arising from documents you create with the Service or from how you use them. ## 8. Governing law These Terms are governed by the laws of the place where the operator of the Service resides, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. ## 9.
